Belt and Road Advanced Workshop on Traditional Chinese Medicine

  CUHK, in collaboration with mainland sister institutions include the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ningxia Medical University, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Sichuan Province, began offering the summer workshop in 2019 to promote the development of TCM.   The workshop, now in its sixth year, has attracted over 2,000 scholars and professionals from nearly thirty TCM institutions in Mainland China and Hong Kong. After three years of preparation, in 2023, nearly twenty TCM universities from institutions along the Belt and Road jointly established the Alliance, making the workshop a significant annual event under the Alliance.   The workshop aims to enhance the standards of transformation and clinical research in TCM, establish a research and development cooperation network of expert scholars in the field of TCM with an international perspective, and collectively promote the continuous internationalization and industrialization of TCM.     The curriculum covers opportunities in TCM within the Belt and Road and Greater Bay Area, the impact of multidisciplinary research on innovation, methods for transforming Chinese herbal medicine, funding proposal formulation, clinical research standards, high-quality research designs, commercialization, and internationalization. The workshop features lectures, visits, and discussions led by global experts in TCM. The Presidents’ Forum

Since its establishment in 2023, the Presidents’ Forum has become the flagship event of the Alliance. The Forum invites government officials, university representatives, and industry leaders from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and countries along the Belt and Road to participate. This platform not only facilitates exchanges and collaborations but also fosters the development and communication of traditional Chinese medicine in these regions. Government, Industry, University and Research Leadership Forum

On 3 November 2023, the inaugural Government, Industry, University and Research Leadership Forum (“The Forum”) was held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Forum received enthusiastic support from the World Health Organization and the Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine from Sichuan and Guangzhou Provinces. Leaders and representatives from over 20 universities, research institutions, and the enterprises of the traditional Chinese medicine industry attended the event.  The forum combines both theoretical and practical content, allowing leaders in the traditional Chinese medicine industry to gain insights into current policies, market trends, technological research, and development. It also facilitates face-to-face dialogues to enhance mutual understanding, promoting the modernization of local renowned traditional Chinese medicine enterprises and their integration with international and mainland counterparts. This aims to further advance the upgrading of the traditional Chinese medicine industry. The key content and dialogues from the conference can serve as a reference for the alliance's future actions and preparations for practical collaborations. 

Belt and Road International Laboratory for Innovative Traditional Medicine Research

  Belt and Road International Laboratory for Innovative Traditional Medicine Research (Joint Laboratory) is initiated by the Alliance. Representatives from units including Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Sichuan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, China Academy of Sciences, Sichuan Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Guizhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine proposed the establishment during the 2023 Presidents' Forum and it was approved by the Chairman of the Alliance. The Joint Laboratory aims to facilitate communication and collaboration in innovative research on traditional medicine among research and development units along the Belt and Road, especially within the Alliance.   A Management Committee of the Joint Laboratory will be set up, composing of representatives nominated by members and recommended by the Chairman of the Alliance. Director of the Joint Laboratory is appointed by members of the Alliance, ensuring compliance with regulations and laws, and executing decisions made by the management committee.   Members of the Joint Laboratory can organize academic activities, research exchanges, and collaborations under the name of the laboratory, apply for funds, accept donations, with activity proposals requiring prior approval by the Alliance. Members of the Joint Laboratory are required to allocate no less than RMB 1,000,000 annually, with 30% designated for personnel exchanges (training fees, scholarships, visiting scholars, and trainers' living expenses, etc.). Funding sources include earmarked allocations, government-sponsored funds, and donations. The laboratory is equipped with advanced research equipment and facilities, overseen by management personnel for daily operations. The Alliance does not assume legal responsibilities for members and their collaborative outcomes. Members violating the laws and regulations will be automatically delisted.   Members of the Alliance who voluntarily agree to and abide by the conditions and articles of incorporation of the Joint Laboratory may be approved for the establishment of Joint Laboratory by the Management Committee. Traditional Medicine Summit Forum

The Traditional Medicine Summit Forum aims to promote the modernization and globalization of traditional medicine. The Forum invites industry leaders and scholars from China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Belt and Road countries to explore new opportunities for traditional medicine within the context of the Belt and Road Initiative. Through keynote speeches and multiple parallel sessions, the Forum delves into the applications of traditional medicine in disease prevention and treatment, as well as research in herbal medicine. The inaugural forum not only facilitated exchanges among participants but also strengthened the international cooperation network among experts and scholars, successfully attracting 500 on-site attendees and over 1,000 online participants, showcasing the potential and significance of traditional medicine in global development.   Past Events   Traditional Medicine Summit Forum 2025
